Rachael Hamilton MSP met with the 1st Duns Guides to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Votes for Women.
The Guides hosted a mock parliamentary debate to promote the ‘Citizen Girl’ initiative that aims to create an equal future for women in politics.
The Citizen Girl initiative calls on political parties to commit to gender equality by putting forward 50% female candidates in local, Scottish and UK elections and to consult with young people on all of the decisions that affect their lives.
Ms Hamilton answered questions from the Guides on her role as an MSP and daily life in Holyrood.
Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire MSP, Rachael Hamilton said:
“Visiting 1st Duns Guides brought back fond memories of my time as a Girl Guide, making friends, learning new skills and gaining confidence.
“The mock parliamentary debate marking the 100th anniversary of Votes for Women and the Citizen Girl initiative was great fun and I was very impressed with the various speeches from the Guides.
“The Citizen Girl initiative is such a positive step forward in encouraging girls into take an interest politics.
“We all must do more to inspire girls to become more involved in decisions that affect them and let them know that their voice matters, especially in politics”.
