Borders MSP Rachael Hamilton has urged the Scottish Government to hold a summit in Eyemouth on what action can be taken to deter aggressive seagulls.

The local MSP has written to Scottish Government minister Jim Fairlie and also asked him a question on the issue in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday.

Last week, Rachael Hamilton MSP wrote to the minister to suggest a summit which would bring together key stakeholders including businesses and local residents to discuss the issue.

At Holyrood on Thursday, Ms Hamilton's question raised the concerns of local businesses after Scottish Government agency NatureScot refused to grant them gull management licenses, only to u-turn when challenged.

NatureScot originally told local businesses they should use dogs to deter seagulls from nearby roofs.

She has previously organised a site visit in Eyemouth to observe the seagull problems with NatureScot, alongside local residents and businesses.

The Borders MSP also secured NatureScot's endorsement to put up signage in Eyemouth.

Scottish Borders MSP, Rachael Hamilton, said: "Aggressive seagulls have become a serious health and safety issue that must be tackled.

"The Scottish Government should hold a seagull summit in Eyemouth so we can work constructively on solutions to this growing problem.

"I've been speaking with many local residents and businesses who say the threat from seagulls is increasingly difficult to control.

"Decisive action must be taken before children or vulnerable people are hurt. More gull management licenses need to be granted and more effective deterrent methods must be put in place.

"I am grateful to NatureScot for engaging with me on this issue, but some of the suggestions to use dogs to deter seagulls on rooftops are unworkable and bordering on ridiculous."
