Local politicians have paid a visit to the largest private employers in the Scottish Borders, Farne Salmon to hear about their plans for the future, as well as the key challenges they are facing.
Rachael Hamilton MSP and John Lamont MP were given a tour of the facility, which employs more than 700 people in the Borders and Northumberland.
During the visit, the politicians discussed the businesses’ plans for the next few years including supplying major retailers like Tesco and now Waitrose. They also discussed the potential challenges Farne are facing, including in terms of recruiting the right skill mix, issues around transport links and preparations for the UK leaving the EU.
Speaking after the visit, John Lamont MP said: “Farne Salmon have won a cabinet full of awards for being a good employer and a fantastic supplier, so I was pleased to be able to pay them a visit.
“It was great to hear that they are now working with both Tesco and Waitrose and have exciting plans for the future.
“We also discussed a number of potential challenges, which both Rachael and myself will be taking forward in the coming weeks and months.”
Rachael Hamilton MSP also said: “Farne Salmon is a great example of a Borders business success story, employing over 700 people in the area.
“Learning about the challenges and opportunities they face, along with their plans for expansion was extremely encouraging.
“I will continue to press the Scottish Government on issues raised on the visit, such as transportation issues and the need for more apprenticeships.
“It is only right that we see every opportunity for Borders businesses to thrive.”
Speaking after the visit, Aileen Firth, Resourcing Manager at Farne Salmon added: “Farne were delighted to welcome Rachael and John.
"We had a very informative chat about many things including education, engaging with hard to reach groups, employment, local public transport and housing matters.”
