There have been calls for safety improvements on the A7 and other major Borders routes.
The A7 Action Group and local MSP Rachael Hamilton have called for improved signage that highlights the number of collisions and fatalities along the route.
Similar signage has been deployed across the country on routes that have a high accident rate.
Rachael Hamilton MSP and Oliver Mundell MSP, who are joint chairs of the A7 Action Group, meet regularly with the group’s members to discuss ways forward for the A7. They have written to the Transport Minister, Michael Matheson and Scottish Borders Council calling for the A7 to be made a priority for upgrades and safety measures.
There are currently no plans on the table to make substantial improvements to the A7, and this has caused concerned amongst many locals and MSPs.
Ms Hamilton has written to both Transport Scotland and Scottish Borders Council calling on them to install new signage.
Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire MSP, Rachael Hamilton said:
“This is a reminder to Transport Scotland and Scottish Borders Council that the A7 needs urgent attention.
“The A7 Action Group and I have suggested that we work together to implement improvements, and signage that reminds drivers to watch their speed given the high accident rate along the route would be one way of doing so.
“The A7 is an important route through the Borders, and we need to see more investment in order to make it fit for the 21st century.
“I will continue to work with Transport Scotland, Scottish Borders Council, A7 Action Group and other stakeholders to push for improvements to make the route safer”.
