Rachael Hamilton MSP visited Springwood Park to hear about the excellent work of the Border Union Schools’ Countryside Day.
The event organised by the Border Union Agricultural Society gives P5 children the chance to experience the countryside and the environment. The event teaches children about food production, farm animals and different aspects of rural life.
Over 1230 children from over 60 schools participated in the Schools Countryside Day, supported by over 50 countryside-based companies.
Ms Hamilton believes that days such as the Schools Countryside Day should be part of the school curriculum in order to reconnect children with the countryside, especially at a time when there is a growing rural-urban divide.
Rachael Hamilton would like to thank the companies and organisations who gave generously in order for the day to be a success.
Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire MSP, Rachael Hamilton said:
“The Border Union Schools’ Countryside Day was a tremendous success, and I would like to thank the organisers and supporters for all their hard work and generous financial support.
“Border Union Agricultural Society are leading the way with the support of Scottish Borders Council and many businesses. This model of engaging children with agriculture should be rolled out across Scotland.
“Educating children about the countryside is extremely important. Teaching children about where their food comes from, not only broadens their knowledge, but also helps them understand the value of food, how to eat healthily and in turn how to reduce food waste.
“I have called for agriculture to be a fundamental part of the curriculum, so that we can tackle climate change and retain our young people in rural areas, such as the Borders.
