Scottish Parliament election candidate Rachael Hamilton has welcomed the Scottish Conservative manifesto commitment to extend the Borders Railway to Hawick, Newcastleton and onto Carlisle.
The pledge builds on ongoing campaigning by local Scottish Conservative representatives to deliver improved transport links for communities across the Borders.
Previous progress has included securing UK Government funding for a feasibility study and the development of a strategic outline business case for the project.
The manifesto commitment states "The Scottish Conservatives would also work with the UK Government to improve rail connections across Scotland. Our first priority would be to see the Borders Railway extended to Carlisle. The feasibility study looking into this project has already been delayed. We would urge all parties to get round the table and resolve these issues so we can get on with upgrading the Borders Railway."
Scottish Conservative candidate for the Scottish Borders, Rachael Hamilton, said:
“I am delighted that the Scottish Conservative manifesto includes a clear commitment to extending the Borders Railway to Hawick, Newcastleton and onto Carlisle.
“This is a project that local Conservative representatives have long championed, and it has the potential to transform our economy and connectivity across the Borders.
“Extending the railway would help to connect communities, support local businesses, and make it easier for people to live and work across the Scottish Borders.
“We have already seen real progress with funding secured for a feasibility study, and this manifesto commitment confirms it is a top priority for the Scottish Conservatives.
“I will continue to make the case for this vital investment which would help to get Scotland working and improve the Borders economy."
