Domestic Abuse Register backed by Borders MSP
Borders MSP Rachael Hamilton has backed plans to create a register for domestic abusers through a private members Bill proposed by West of Scotland MSP Pam Gosal
The Bill is currently at the consultation stage, with Ms Gosal seeking views from stakeholders and the wider public on her proposals.
The proposals aim to tackle domestic abuse and improve support for those affected by requiring those convicted of offences related to domestic abuse to provide information for a register, similar to that already in place for child and sex offences.
This information would be used to prevent further harm, aid rehabilitation, and contribute to the creation of educational resources to be used in schools.
Ms Hamilton welcomed the plans, and encouraged stakeholder and members of the public to engage with the consultation process to ensure the plans could progress.
The consultation for the proposed Bill will remain open until 20th November
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“It is important that we see steps taken to tackle the horrors of domestic abuse in Scotland.
“Sadly, we see cases of domestic abuse appear in the pages of our local newspapers here in the Borders regularly. The reality is that victims of domestic abuse are not hard to come by.
“We must do everything we can to support them, and ensure that we are proactive in preventing this kind of abuse from happening in the first place.
“That is why I am backing my colleague Pam Gosal’s Bill, which puts prevention at the heart of Scotland’s strategy for dealing with domestic abuse.
“I would encourage as many people as to engage with the consultation process, and I am very happy to help individuals and organisations do so.
