Rachael Hamilton MSP is encouraging Borderers to contribute to the Common Good consultation currently open on the Scottish Borders Council website.
This consultation seeks views on the Common Good registers for the former Burghs of the Scottish Borders.
All former Burghs have a 'Common Good' which comprises the land, buildings, art, artefacts and funds which were owned and managed by the Burgh Council on behalf of the residents of the Burgh.
Following an investigation of the assets held by Scottish Borders Council, the council have prepared a draft asset register for each former Burgh.
SBC are now seeking Borderers’ views on whether any additional assets should be included on these registers. It may be the case that local people have further information on the assets noted or believe that an item on the register should not be included on the Common Good registers.
When the consultation ends, there will be a meeting of each Common Good Sub-Committee, where it will be determined if any assets should be added to the register or removed.
Mrs Hamilton believes the consultation is important for local voices to be heard and for people to ensure that the Common Good Register is accurate.
The Common Good Consultation closes on 21st March 2022.
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“It is important that Borderers contribute to the consultation on Common Good registers.
“Without a doubt, there will be local people in each Burgh with knowledge of what should or shouldn’t be included on the register.
“This forms an important part of shaping the assets of towns such as Selkirk, Hawick or Kelso.
“It is crucial that these registers are accurate, so I would urge people who have specific knowledge of Common Good assets to lodge a submission”.
