General Store Selkirk

Last week, I helped open the newest branch of The General Store in Selkirk, a not-for-profit organisation in the town.

Now almost 3 years old, The General Store in Selkirk has grown rapidly with the support of funders such as The National Lottery and the Scottish Borders Local Action Group (LAG).

I was invited to open the new Reuse Store on Market Place alongside local councillors, representatives from South of Scotland Enterprise, Scottish Borders Council, The National Lottery and a number of other local organisations.

The newest addition to the Selkirk High Street includes a new ‘Tool Library’ where Borderers can hire power tools, and a ‘Computer Clinic’ where sessions are offered to improve computer skills for older members of the community.

The General Store has helped the town grow its commitment to Net Zero – offering general repairs on a ‘no fix no fee’ basis and encouraging people to borrow and not buy.

I urge all Borderers to visit their collection of stores to understand what good work The General Store does for the Selkirk community and take advantage of the good value renting options available!

Thanks to Sue Briggs and her team of volunteers for the effort they have put in so far. I hope to see much of their excellent community work in the coming years.
